The designer Liisa Soolepp is inspired by the forests of Estonia with her knit designs. Famous customers of her are among others Lenna Kuurmaa, front-singer from the rock band Vanilla Ninja.

Fall4Me: Dear Liisa, thank you for participating in my project and for agreeing to the interview. What is typically Estonian about Liisa Soolepp Design?
Liisa Soolepp: My aim is to create designs which are unique and at the same time practical. The items are made by using modern manufacturing possibilities, but the sense of human hand is still there. In my designs I put main emphasis to patterns, textures and colours. And to balance it I keep the cuts of the garments quite simple. I really like the idea of knitted coats, which are suitable for cold scandinavian climate.

What makes it exclusively "made in Estonia"?
In my life and creative work I follow the holistic way of seeing the world. I'm happy to be Estonian and to live in neighborhood with forests, which gives me the opportunity to feel myself connected with nature. My collections are mostly inspired by the forest as an extremely powerful sign-system. The forest is full of structures and patterns. This is like a holy script, full of senses and endless possibilities. I like to play caleidoscopical games with different elements of forest such as spiderwebs, leaves, animal footprints, mushroom structures and so on. Estonian forest inspires me to find archaic signs and patterns and to use them in urban context, bringing them closer to modern people. It means taking an element out of itˇs original context and recreating it in new system. And of course all my products are made by lovely Estonian ladys.

Why exactly did you choose to concentrate on knit wear?
When during my studies in artschool I saw the knitting-maschine first time, it momentarily raised the interest what maschine is it and what is possible to do with it. I haven' t analyzed that "magnetism", simply the theme of knitwear attracts me and it's been very interesting to discover that world. It's somehow in my blood and the part of my creative DNA.

Who and what were your motivations?
Creating the designs I mostly like to play with pattern. I search inspiration from archaic signs and symbols, which have the ability to accumulate thoughts and meanings, therefore allowing peace and stillness to take place. I like to think about clothes as talismans, which create unseen protective and supporting environment around the wearer, besides the function of simply covering the body. Through the clothes, which are „loaded” by this idea, we are experiencing world and recording memories and impulses. I wish, that my clothes could function as a bufferzone between the world and the wearer.

Since your design is based on knit wear. How - in your opinion - does knit fit in for spring?
Very well, I think. And I hope my new spring collection will be the proof of it.

Can you imagine to widen your field in design?
Maybe in the future, but now there is so much more to discover and learn in the field of knit-wear and therefore I'd prefer to focus on this at the moment.

How popular is knit wear in Estonia compared to other countries?
I guess, it's quite popular here. It depends on our climate also, because there is quite much time of coldness, when you wish to cover yourself with warm knit-wear. And as during the last years our scene of knit-wear design has lot developed, those obstacles come nicely together.

A sentence that everyone should know to say in Estonian is...?
Tark ei torma! (Wiseman is never in hurry!)

Knit-wear has been a highly celebrated trend in the international fashion scene in the past years. Maybe the Estonian touch fascinated you now. If so, visit Liisa Soolepp on Facebook for all her creations and to get her fashion online.

Fashion Made In Estonia #1 with Tanel Veenre

Tere kallid sõbrad,

if you are following me on my social networks (Facebook/Instagram/Twitter) you are already informed that today I am launching my project April-project "Fashion made in Estonia". This project is about introducing you the Estonian culture of mentality and fashion. For that I have interviewed six Estonian fashion people who are talking about their work, their nation and themselves. The artists will be introduced one by one on my social media (follow me to stay tuned). For those of you who may wonder why I picked Estonia, well, it is my most favorite country which I as well admire for the fashion. Apart from that I believe that the Baltic state may be small but it is of high international potential.

I feel most honored to begin this project with the jewelry designer Tanel Veenre. The 37-year old designer has launched his jewellery label named TVJ in various European countries and Turkey. Besides from that he is a professor at the Estonian academy of Arts which he graduated in 2005. His creations differ from the average jewellery which is supposed to take the wearer on a journey.

Fall4Me: Dear Tanel, thank you for participating in my project and for agreeing to the interview. Me and my readers are very excited to read about your story. So the first questions is: What is typical Estonian about Tanel Veenre Jewellery? What makes it exclusively 'made in Estonia'?
Tanel Veenre: I am probably not the best and most typical representative of Estonian jewellery. But analyzing the Estonian jewellery phenomen that has gained lot of attention internationally I would describe it - sensitive, spiritual, acromatic, organic, thoughtful and patient. There is always something behind the surfice, nothing isn't as it seems at the first sight.

Does it make any difference to be a male or female designer in Estonia?
Estonia has a long tradition of strong female figures in jewellery - my teacher Kadri Mälk, her teacher Leili Kuldkepp, then Ede Kurrel... So if Europe is struggling with male dominant figures on the field then here it is vice versa. But personally I wouldn't have picked up this topic - talent shines through gender roles. Sometimes balance between ambition and family life makes it harder for women to be so strongly present in area - but this doesn't make the work weaker.

If you would not be a jewellry designer what would have you become?
My curse and blessing is art - this was clear from early on. So it wouldn't have mattered much wheather I have chosen graphic art, fashion, painting ... Hands on creating was my way from the beginning.

How is a woman supposed to feel when she is wearing Tanel Veenre jewellery? What is the message of your creations?
Talking about my small series (www.tvj.ee) - these delicate and colorful creations should make one feel special, cheerful, mysterious ... Different series have a different character as well. But in general - you need a creative and strong soul yourself to step into dialogue with strong pieces of jewellery.

What can the world learn from Estonian jewellery design?
Beauty of patience.

A sentence that everyone should know to say in Estonian is...?
Ilu päästab maailma / Beauty saves the world

Blue

Hello sweet people,

...

He was taken
It was loved
Secretly a choice mistaken
Something no one wanted to let go of
Letting me dream instead being awaken
From the judgement from above

I felt drawn to him
He was my beautiful dream
A brilliant of a man
Hopefully together - if we can?
That was all I saw
Though it was against moral and law

When I was fragile like the pastel mint
He caught me tight like a flint
This was his strong embrace
From that moment he left his trace
He has been there when I need it most
He never asked for a cost

It seems a mix it seems confuse
Two things at once I can't refuse
No idea about what I'm talking
But always the same no matter where I'm walking
My heart wants to scream it out
But not yet - it's under a dark cloud
The big dream I don't believe in of me and you
So to cover you in public you are blue

Made Up My Mind

Hey my sweet people,

this is it! Enough is enough!

I made up my mind.

I may not know everything but I made up my mind,
I may not do it all right but I made up my mind,
I may not always make the right choices but I made up my mind.
I may not be sure of what to do and what to think but I made up my mind.

I made up my mind and I will not regret it,
I made up my mind and I have faith that it is right,
I made up my mind and I want to go for it,
I made up my mind and I know that it will make me happy.

I made up my mind.

Underestimating myself was yesterday. The time to hope has come. It is time for action.

Season Trend: White Spring!

Hello my dear readers,

happy official beginning of spring!

I believe we have all finally thawed from the coldness and darkness from winter with the spring trends I have recently presented you in the transition-time from the beginning of March. Spring is the time when flowers blossom out, when the warm sun's rays touch us and when it is time to shine and see bright skies. If you have not yet noticed it here is a recap of the spring trends of 2015:

The answer is white. Actually we are used to the term "white Christmas" or "white winter" but "white spring"? I understand that no one of you wants to freeze again. But white has not only accompanied my looks but also the trends. White is the serenity that is holding and carrying us to make us feel lighter. White is the good vibe that pulling us out of the black shadows and lead us to the right of way decisions. White is the cure that is lying on us to recover our demaged soul. In the end the pure white is the ray that will make us shine.

Having this in mind I wish you a happy white sping.

Walls & Ways

Hello my sweet people,

we fall in love, we have dreams, we want to travel, we have a dream-job, we have aims, we want to spread our wings and fly. If there just wouldn't be these damn walls that are coming into our way and let us all see black. Shall we stop? Shall we take another direction? Shall we choose an easier way...? And stay forever unsatisfied with this alternative solution?

I may seem pure, untouched and tender but trust me - just like I can break you I can break these walls, break through and continue my way. It might take a while to notice me behind this black wall, it might be hard but in the end this is my path to happiness and to success which I do not want to leave. The aim to shine, my reason to go on and trust me I will shine through these black walls. I will continue my way.

Heja Sverige!

Hej vänner,

it overcame me,
suddenly I couldn't think of anything else,
I wanted it and nothing but it,
no matter how much I fought it my choice always went back to it,
and I took it.

In the end everyone loved my choice for another reason. My nails brought up warmest spring and summer feelings to everyone but me they remind of the Swedish flag. Jag älsker Sverige!
